Avoid Buying Shoes Online!
We’ve all been there—scrolling through an online store, spotting a pair of shoes that looks perfect, and clicking “Add to Cart.” While online shopping can be convenient, as a podiatrist, I often see the fallout from footwear that just doesn’t fit properly.
The problem with buying shoes online is that it’s almost impossible to truly know how they’ll fit until you’ve got them on your feet. Every brand has slightly different sizing, and even within the same brand, some styles might fit narrower or wider than others. A shoe that’s even slightly too tight or too loose can cause a host of issues, including:
- Blisters and calluses from friction.
- Bunions or hammer toes worsening due to cramped toe boxes.
- Heel pain or plantar fasciitis from insufficient arch support.
Plus, your feet are unique—your arch height, foot width, and even how you walk all play a role in finding the right shoe. That’s why I always recommend trying shoes on in person whenever possible. Take them for a quick test walk around the shop to ensure they feel supportive, comfortable, and well-suited to your foot shape.
If you do buy online, make sure the store has a good return policy so you’re not stuck with shoes that don’t fit. And if you’re unsure what to look for in a shoe, a consultation with a podiatrist can help you choose the right style for your needs.
At the end of the day, your feet carry you through life—don’t leave their comfort and health to chance.
