Ankle Sprains
Overview
Ankle injuries can happen to people of all ages and activity levels. Slips or trips when walking, or more athletic endeavours can all result in ankle sprains. No matter what the cause, one thing remains the same - if they are not treated properly at the beginning, middle and during recovery, you can be prone to having ankle sprains again and again into the future.
Condition Information
Sports including netball, basketball, hockey, soccer, football and tennis all can lead to ankle sprains due to the fast pace twisting and turning these activities involve. .
Ligaments and the arrangement of the bones around the ankle joint provide stability to the ankle. When too much force is applied to the ankle the joint is pushed past its range of motion resulting in the tearing or stretching of the ligaments. These injuries are often graded depending on the amount of fibers damaged:
- GRADE 1- Stretching and minor damage to the ligaments.
- GRADE 2- Partial tear of a ligament, excessive movement around the joint
- GRADE 3- Full tear of a ligament, severe pain, instability
